When I filed to run for Bellbrook City Council, I knew that I would have some headwinds. As a first-time candidate, I have lived in Bellbrook for five years. And I like to say, “I’m a blueberry in a cherry pie.” But, as the saying goes, if you’re not going uphill, you’re on the wrong road.
Last week, the evening after the election, I experienced Trauma Tuesday. I started to have Weepy Wednesday, but that only lasted until lunch. Because I started realizing a few things.
I placed 4th by a mere 15 votes. I will not beat myself up over that number. The margin was .75% – yes less than 1%. I was only 7% away from the top vote getter. I am a woman – but I did not run as a woman. I am a Senior – but I did not run as a Senior. And I am a Democrat – but I did not run as a Democrat. This nonpartisan race was made partisan by my opponents.
Here’s the evidence that my campaign was nonpartisan: According to Secretary of State data, there are only 433 Democrats in Bellbrook. I received 1048 votes. So thank you to the Republican and Independent voters, who appreciated my nonpartisan and Bellbrook-focused message. I was sad to see that, even with the City Council vote and 3 levies on the ballot, our turnout was only 35%. Bellbrook has 5500 voters, and less than 2000 turned out to voice their opinion about the future of our City. We can do better.
Will I run again? Let’s just say I’m not going to disappear. I am going to continue working to bring good things to Bellbrook. And as stated by a Council member this week, a competitive race makes our town better. Those in power should not run in uncontested races, with the ability to just walk back into office. Bellbrook deserves choices.
One reason I was able to accomplish so much was because of those who helped me. My campaign received donations from people who believed in me, and the donations were both large and small. I had a supportive Campaign Team. And over 20 volunteers worked hard in multiple roles. Thank you to everyone who helped me. And thank you to everyone who voted for me, listened to me, or even just shook my hand at your door. I hope to meet you again soon, and that you consider me a person who works hard and listens to you.
