We’ve all heard a knock at our door and wondered – now what?! There’s a difference between a solicitor, who wants to sell you something, and a canvasser, conducting non-commercial activity. First of all, if I knock on your door to say hello and talk about Bellbrook and my campaign, I hope you answer! I am a canvasser, and my discussion with you is considered free speech. No permit is required.
If someone is selling something, they are a solicitor, and there are the laws set forward in Bellbrook. They must carry and display a license from the City. Licenses are obtained by submitting an application to the city, paying $20, and having a background check from the Bellbrook Police Department. If you believe someone isn’t following the law, call the Bellbrook Police Department at (937) 848-3252. Your safety is the City’s priority.
As always, the City of Bellbrook has great information posted, including free “No solicitor” signs, a permit application, and the complete ordinance at https://www.bellbrook.gov/page/police_solicitors.
